Antwerp ZOO
When you visit Antwerp ZOO, you can’t help but be surprised by its delightful 19th-century landscaped garden in the French style. The entire garden is a listed heritage site – even the meandering paths and original ground surfaces are protected. As you wander past elegantly designed flowerbeds, majestic trees provide cooling shade on hot days. Everything here has been planted with the utmost care, in keeping with the ZOO’s historic buildings and works of art. The Flemish Garden, with its indigenous plants, entices you to explore this biodiversity paradise, home to countless butterflies, bees and other insects. Once the weather is warm enough, around forty fan and date palms are planted – pots and all – into the Congo Lawn each year. Did you know that the ZOO’s gardeners carefully restore the original striped pattern every time they mow the gently sloping lawns? The cactus garden, too, has been a fixture of the ZOO’s landscape since time immemorial. Another eye-catcher is the iconic Winter Garden, with its glass dome and exotic plants. From April to September, the garden comes alive with a unique collection of butterflies, in a dazzling display of colour. We cordially invite you to enjoy this green oasis in the heart of Antwerp!
