The Rock Garden “Bloemendal”, designed by landscape architect Paul Dewit, was created in 1958 as part of the World Expo in Brussels, Expo ’58. It is an alpine garden with an artificial mountain stream and waterfalls. This garden, located in the Provincial Domain of Huizingen, covers more than 5 hectares and contains over 80,000 plants, many of which come from various mountain regions.

The Rock Garden “Bloemendal” is the highlight, but also the swan song, of the Belgian garden art movement “Le Nouveau Jardin Pittoresque,” founded in 1912. This movement promoted poetic corners, decorative elements, and water features, with a picturesque appearance that fits perfectly into the natural landscape. Paul Dewit went beyond this concept by creating plant communities that mimic nature as closely as possible.
