Vordenstein Park is a green oasis in Schoten. In this castle park with both French rectilinear elements and more English and natural-looking spots, you will find old, remarkable and even unique trees, open grassland, natural ponds, and an orangery with Orangery Garden.
Background
Vordensteyn originated in the 14th century and was known as a ‘court of plaisance’, a pleasure garden and country house for the wealthy Antwerp residents. Most of the landscape dates back to 1850.
Orangery Garden
The orangery was built around 1800 in a late-classicist style. The Orangery Garden has become a ‘social garden’, a garden that changes with the seasons, that is alive and ready for visitors to explore. We can rely on a large group of volunteers to roll up their sleeves to help us with this. In addition to its incredibly large Dahlia collection, the Orangery Garden also provides a few people with the opportunity to cultivate a vegetable patch, as was traditionally done in this garden.
Sustainable management
Vordenstein is seen as a practical example of Harmonic Park and Green Management that takes into account the needs of people, nature, and the environment. That means there’s no pesticide use at all and many animals find breeding grounds, food, and shelter in the park.
