The Observatoire du Monde des Plantes (OMP) is the botanical garden of the University of Liège. Covering an area of 2,300 m2, it comprises four greenhouses that recreate three of our planet’s biomes: tropical and subtropical deciduous rainforests, Mediterranean forests, woodlands and scrublands, and xeric deserts and shrublands.
OMP’s collections include around 3,000 plant species, subspecies and varieties. Drawing on this rich plant heritage, the OMP highlights certain typical or thematic plant formations, such as the evolutionary history of terrestrial plants, the co-evolution of plants and animals, or exceptional species or biological mechanisms. In this way, it aims to raise awareness among the general public of various disciplines, in particular biology and ecology, but also of environmental issues such as the erosion of biodiversity, global warming and the loss of natural habitats.
In addition to schools and families, the OMP welcomes students from ULiège and other higher education institutions, as well as researchers. It hosts a large number of internships, provides a site for final-year projects, and supplies botanical material for practical work by students of pharmaceutical sciences, biology and veterinary medicine, as well as for scientific research.
